My oldest daughter has a new summer job. She’s been a nanny for the last two summers and she’s having a hard time adjusting to a “real” job – one that doesn’t involve swimming in the pool each afternoon, playing board games or taking field trips to the local Natural History Museum. Sigh. Poor kid.
So, the other day — nice mom that I am — I bought her a pair of dangly earrings to wear to work and cheer her up a bit. I mean honestly, who can feel that badly when they are wearing gorgeous new jewelry?!
As I searched through the racks and cases I was struck by a wonderful trend — Bollywood-inspired styles — loads of multicolored beads, large hoops, shoulder-dusters — even pieces that featured carved elephants and raja-worthy faux gems.
Personally, I have been a huge Bollywood fan since I first saw Bride and Prejudice back in 2004 starring incomparably beautiful Aishwarya Rai. (How much fun CAN you have dancing around in your pajamas?!) Kitchy, yes. But oh so much fun!
The best part of any Bollywood production for me, though, is the fashion. Bright colors like lime green and shocking pink, fabrics shots with metallic threads, and of course, piles and piles of sparkly jewelry!
Apparently, I’m not alone in this fascination for “more is more.” Just last night on So You Think You Can Dance (yes, I am a fan) the opening number for the “girls” was a fabulous Indian-themed extravaganza. There is something so wonderfully feminine and alluring about the Bollywood style — they never looked better.
… maybe I’ll have to borrow those earrings myself!
