Wanted (2009)

(Wikipedia) – Radhe (Salman Khan) is a hard-core gangster . A sharp-shooter with a sharp brain, he works for Gani Bhai, the dreaded Mafioso, on his own terms. Totally fearless, Radhe singlehandedly eliminates Gani Bhai’s enemies, one by one – making more enemies in the process. The man is devoid of any principles; he is arrogant, ruthless and does not care about the emotions of other people.

Radhe’s astounded when young and pretty Jhanvi (Ayesha Takia) professes her affection for him. Jahnavi is a very simple innocent and a naive girl and she believes that everything is good in the world and nothing is bad. After she meets Radhe she realizes that all her previous notions were wrong and life after that becomes a roller coaster ride.

The introductory scene of Salman Khan’s character – aka the first fight scene – was nearly a straight lift of the fight scene from Deewar (1975) where Amitabh locks them in with him and gives them the key.

I’m not locked in here with you, you’re locked in here with me.

This film just kept on getting better and better. I may dislike Salman Khan and generally avoid anything he stars in, but DUDE, this was so fun! And OTT Vinod Khanna was AWESOME. I’ll admit to making fun of Ayesha Takia’s watermelon boob job, and Salman Khan’s weave. I couldn’t not make fun!

It’s a predictable run-of-the-mill trashy action flick with over-the-top dishoom-dishoom fight scenes, dramatic zoom-ins, cheesy dialogue, and characters with their own theme-songs that play generally whenever they enter a scene. But man, they’re always fun!

I mean, I love films like Hero (China), Zemlya (Soviet Union), and Gaav (Iran) – but I have so much fun with trash films like Billa (Tollywood), Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam (Turkey), and The Machine Girl (Japan).

The first song was surprisingly catchy. I had seen a couple teasers for it on the Eros channel on YouTube and it looked really lame. However, it was anything but. The song was fun and catchy, plus we had random appearances by Anil Kapoor, Govinda, and Prabhu Deva himself! I couldn’t actually find a complete version that featured Prabhu Deva dancing with Salman and Govinda, but THIS preview has all the best bits included.

Then we had a big Mughal-E-Azam reference for a while which had me in stitches.

A couple other songs were fun:

There were some more serious elements to it, what with the evil police officer who threatens to rape our damsel, and lots of gruesome killing (which was totally awesome, for the record).

Overall? It was entertaining. Would I watch it again? Perhaps if the mood was right.

Rating: 4/5

I ‘LOL’ed so hard near the end because of the lengths they went to get Salman to take off his shirt and show off his six pack.

It kind of reminded me of that fight scene from Bujjigadu…

Mumbai terror suspect David Headley was ‘rogue US secret agent’

A key terror suspect who allegedly helped to plan last year’s attacks in Mumbai and plotted to strike Europe was an American secret agent who went rogue, Indian officials believe.

David Coleman Headley (aka Daood Sayed Gilani), 49, who was born in Washington to a Pakistan diplomat father and an American mother, was arrested in Chicago in October. He is accused of reconnoitering targets in India and Europe for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the Pakistan-based terror group behind the Mumbai attacks and of having links to al-Qaeda. He has denied the charges.

He came to the attention of the US security services in 1997 when he was arrested in New York for heroin smuggling. He earned a reduced sentence by working for the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) infiltrating Pakistan-linked narcotics gangs.

Indian investigators, who have been denied access to Mr. Headley, suspect that he remained on the payroll of the US security services — possibly working for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) — but switched his allegiance to LeT.

“India is looking into whether Headley worked as a double agent,” an Indian Ministry of Home Affairs official said yesterday.

Mr. Headley, who changed his name from Daood Gilani, was in Mumbai until two weeks before the attacks on the city, which claimed 166 lives last November. It is alleged that he spent months checking targets in India’s commercial capital, using his Western looks and anglicized name to move in elite social circles, hobnob with Bollywood actors and even to pass himself off as Jewish.

Despite being firmly on the radar of the US intelligence agencies, he was allowed to return to India as recently as March. Indian officials are furious that their American counterparts did not share details of that visit at the time. The Indian media has raised the possibility that Mr. Headley was being protected by his American handlers — a theory that experts say is credible.

“The feeling in India is that the US has not been transparent,” said B. Raman, a former counter-terrorism chief in the Indian foreign intelligence service, the Research and Analysis Wing.

“That Headley was an agent for the DEA is known. Whether he was being used by the CIA as well is a matter of speculation, but it is almost certain that the CIA was aware of him and his movements across the subcontinent.”

According to Mr. Raman, it is probable that Mr. Headley, who was arrested when the US authorities learned that he was about to fly to Pakistan, was listed on the main database of the US National Counterterrorism Center, a facility used by the CIA and several other American agencies to track terror suspects.

Indian officials suspect that US agencies declined to share intelligence to avoid compromising other secret operations and to to be able to deny any link with Mr. Headley.

Analysts believe that the US may also have been anxious to avoid sharing information that could further raise tensions between India and Pakistan, nuclear-armed neighbors who have fought three wars.

According to documents put before a court in Chicago, Mr. Headley had links with the Pakistan Army and, through it, with al-Qaeda.

As well as helping to co-ordinate the Mumbai atrocity, Mr. Headley is accused of planning attacks on Mumbai’s Bollywood film industry, the Shiv Sena, a Hindu extremist group also based in Mumbai, a major Hindu temple, and a Danish newspaper that had published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

The US authorities allege that he was close to Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a former Pakistani schoolmate and businessman who is also being charged with planning to attack the Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten. Mr. Rana is accused of having known about the attack on Mumbai in advance.

The CIA denied that Headley had worked for the organization.

“Any suggestion that Headley was working for the CIA is complete and utter nonsense. It’s flat-out false,” Paul Gimigliano, from the CIA’s Office of Public Affairs, said.

The Indian Home Secretary, Gopal Krishna Pillai, has said that his Government would seek the extradition of Mr. Headley — a request that has so far been stonewalled by US officials.

Fool marks

The smartest thing about “3 Idiots” is that director Raju Hirani uses the student crowd of his IIT-inspired engineering college as a laughter track. This means when an idiotic joke is cracked, everyone in the audience thinks the next person laughed and so they laugh too. Which is ironic because one of the things that the story of “3 Idiots” attacks is herd mentality but that’s my explanation for the uproarious laughter that bounced off the walls every now and then during “3 Idiots” because this movie is not really a comedy. It’s actually bordering on tragic. And not just because the men in this movie have a thing for pulling their pants down and exposing rather unphotogenic bottoms in very unflattering underwear, although it really was very sad that there wasn’t one yummy specimen of masculinity in an entire college of men. If any of you find the boys dancing in their towels to “Aal Izz Well” attractive, you have problems that are far more serious than the butchering that the story suffers in “3 Idiots”.

In the first half of “3 Idiots”, two plotlines are set up. One is of a road trip that Farhan (Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi) take with an old college mate (Chaturlingam, played by Omi) to find their dearest friend in college, Rancho (Aamir Khan). The other is a tale told in flashback by Farhan of their time in college and the heroic antics of Rancho, a prankster who could crack the system and be a topper even while fighting the system’s intention of turning people into zombies. Rancho doesn’t believe in ragging or memorising textbooks. He loves learning, likes to think for himself and he would like people to feel the same thrill that he does when he invents his gadgets. And he’s aware that engineering isn’t the stuff to fire everyone’s pulse rate. At this point, to quote Rancho, aal is well. Ok, so Aamir Khan is an awful caricature of a 20-something and hams so much that Maharashtra could cheerfully stop pig farming for the next couple of years, but that doesn’t kill the experience of watching “3 Idiots”. Sharman Joshi is good, Omi and Madhavan are convincing; the script has its  moments. Most importantly, you can’t not cheer for the guy who takes on the system and champions the idea of being yourself.

Then comes the second half during which, with rigorous and meticulous care, the director and script team demolish everything that was well-set up in the first half and create so much unnecessary, teary melodrama that you have to wonder whether some glycerine manufacturer didn’t give the money to make “3 Idiots”. So the following happens in this chrono-illogical order:

1. In the present we discover Rancho is not Rancho. The fake Rancho (Aamir Khan) is bright but poor lad while the real Rancho (Jaaved Jaffrey) is a rich man’s idiotic son. The real Rancho’s dad decrees that the fake Rancho will get the grades and degrees in the real Rancho’s name. So the real Rancho goes off to London while the fake Rancho comes to study engineering. If you think this idea has holes in it, wait for the rest.

2. In the past, we see Boman Irani, who plays the principal of the engineering college, get into an ego tussle with Rancho (the fake one, naturally, being played by Aamir Khan). He embroils Farhan and Raju into his spat because he knows they are Rancho’s weak spots and remorselessly does a series of cruel, horrible things, including pushing Raju to attempt suicide. Irani’s character, who was initially shown as a slightly eccentric academic, turns out to be a monster who runs the college like a fiefdom. It’s difficult to decide which is more appalling: Irani’s character, his performance or the fact that we’re supposed to like him because he likes his grandkid and admits defeat to Rancho with utter lack of grace.

3. Also in the past, Rancho delivers a baby using a vaccum cleaner. It seems to be stillborn but instead of kicking the bucket, it kicks Rancho in the face when it hears the words “Aal is well” and so joins the living.

4. In the present, Raju and Farhan elope with Pia (Kareena Kapoor), whom Rancho had a crush on in their college days and the only woman in the world who doesn’t want to take off excruciatingly-heavy wedding jewellery while on a road trip. No, Raju and Farhan don’t both want to marry her; they want to reunite her with Rancho (who they’ve just discovered isn’t Rancho). Whom they haven’t met in some 10-odd years and whose real name they still don’t know. No matter. They know he’d want to marry Pia even though he flatly refused to marry her back in college.

5. Rancho turns out to be an inventor with 400 patents pending and a school in Ladakh.

It’s inexplicable to me that the people who began the story the way they did could actually finish it off like this.

I really, really wanted to like “3 Idiots” and, just for what it says in the first part, I hope it does well. I hope parents see it and I hope young people take some confidence from it. Some characters could have been less flatly written (like Omi and Raju) but neither this nor the pantomime versions of humans as played by Aamir Khan and Boman Irani overwhelm a heartwarming beginning. Unfortunately, what happens in the second part is that the system wins. Rancho isn’t able to rub the principal’s nose in the dirt and we are given no indication that he isn’t being a bastard to the next round of students or changing things at the college to allow more free thinking. An unnecessary romance is thrown in, possibly because the Bollywood system demands it. Glycerine and tears flow and it’s amazing that the outflow from the shooting from this film didn’t make up for the paltry monsoons this year. But most heartbreakingly, there’s so much cruelty in the script; particularly towards poor people, characters like Raju whose poverty and whose family’s misfortunes somehow become an uproarious joke. Except sitting in a plush, comfortable chair in a swanky movie theatre and wearing a skirt that cost half of how much Raju’s mother apparently earned in a month, I didn’t find it funny.

Aamir Khan Crashes Wedding

Artists: Aamir Khan

Review: In a recent attempt to promote “3 Idiots“, Aamir Khan disguised himself as a hippie and attended a wedding function in rural Punjab.  Apparently pulling pranks has been his latest idea for increasing awareness about the film.  Once people realized who he was, he performed and danced with the crowd…Only to leave after inviting the bride and groom to his premiere in Mumbai.

Where were these “pranks” on August 15th, when (no not India celebrating it’s independence) I was celebrating my dependence?

Avatar

Avatar is the up coming Hollywood movie. It has created huge hype all over world. The main reason behind this the director James Cameron. His previous movies was  The Terminator, Terminator 2, Aliens and Rambo : First Blood Part 2.

We know the sensations created by these movie. The classic movie Titanic was also directed bye James Cameron only. It has broken Box Office records in every country. That love story with an extra ordinary back drop has attracted every one. The lead cast of that movie Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslete are still famous world wide.

Every one expecting that, Avatar will create new history like Titanic. Its going to release with highest number of prints all over world. Producers has spent nearly 2500 crores on that movie.

Recently James Cameron has said that, every rupee appears on the screen. Already who has seen the premiere shows has spoken very high. Lets wait until December 18th for the surprises of Avatar.

Review Before Release-III follow-ups

Azab Prems’ Ghazab success…London Dreams dashed & Kurbaan’s low collection are baffling
  • Aladdin was a damp-squib and my opinion on it reflected that I was reading  too much into BigB blog. Aladdin was meant to be a children film which never was going to be Blockbuster but atleast I expected it to be entertaining! sigh! As I naggigingly fely in my Pre-review, Director Sujoy Ghosh really messed on the story like his previous Home Delivery.
  • London Dreams was most tragic disaster. Its tragic not because of that I felt it would be a solid Hit. But a good movie was rejected by the masses. Movie was intense but I think the timing did it in. Afterall we just watched Ajay D in hilarious All The Best and Salman as macho ‘Wanted’.Music was also a let-down.

  • APKGK & Jail : the youthfulness of Ajab Prem and trust associated with Raj Kumar Santoshi did-in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail… a surprise hit despite mainstream media critics siding with Jail. Jail was good but it drowned itself in over-confidence and over-expectation. People thought that Jail is already a hit so patronize APKGK.  My hunch was spot-on.
  • Tum Mile- drowning and drowsing affair. Below average and bordering flop. Mahesh Bhatt no doubt blames it on Rahul Bhatt controversy. But poor films do lead to poor excuses.
  • Kurbaan- is brilliant. such movie starts slow. Fingers crossd, I expect it to be bigger grosser than APKGK. It didn’t. Shocking. Can’t figure out why! May be clock has covered its full circle….Poor showing of Kurbaan is bad omen for Dharma Productions My Name is Khan

  • De DAna Dan- the publicity is huge and good too. But…but the gags  shown are too common. As I mentioned in my pre-review De Dana collection were average at BO and that mainly due to Priyadarshans’ past reputation. And as reports come in it is sold at about 12 crore rupees on satellite television!
  • Radio - inspite of brilliant music Radio is complicated and flops badly. Even a child have guessed it when the promo started. We want Music composer and singer in Himesh Reshamiyya back!

Paa is suuccessful mainly due to intelligent film making and marketing. Rocket Singh-SOTY is a flop (Perhaps now Yash Chopra and Aditya Chpra should make films by themselves and not rely on their assistants)

All eyes on 3 Idiots, Veer and My Name is Khan.

REVIEW: Salman rocks in WANTED!

He wears a Superman T-shirt, slides like the Spiderman and fights like the He-man. If you think this is too much, let me tell you, he dances as well. And boy! This time around he can make you fall for him in an instant with his moves. To put it shortly, Salman Khan rocks as Radhe – a tapori, a hitman – he listens to no one and works only for ‘money’bhai.

A good mix of romance, comedy and songs spice up this action flick. Salman looks nothing like we saw him in No Entry, Partner or Yuvvraaj. The actor has not only shed a lot of weight, he almost dropped his typical accent as Radhe.

Also starring Ayesha Takia Azmi in the lead, Wanted is a remake of the 2006 Telugu film Pokkiri. Wanted marks the Bollywood debut of ace choreographer-turned-filmmaker Prabhu Deva. Kudos to him for making Salman dance like never before. For the first time ever Salman seems to enjoy his steps wholeheartedly (with right expressions) and not dance for the heck of it.

Sallu’s Ganpati song, Jalwa, was apparently kept secret from audiences for very long before the release. Undoubtedly, it is the best of the lot. And why not, when someone like Prabhu Deva himself has choreographed it, nothing but the best is expected.

The film definitely has a South Indian touch and feel to it but the best part is, as a filmmaker Prabhu Deva doesn’t try to experiment much. Yet whatever he does (read silly) he does it with oodles of style.

Prabhu Deva’s take on Mughal-E-Azam’s song Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya with Sallu and Ayesha looks too funny. The lovey-dovey episodes between Sallu and Ayesha sometimes make no sense at all. Sample this… Sallu and Ayesha get stuck inside the lift. Ayesha is frightened and comes closer to Salman. She gives a coy smile and Salman smiles back as Ayesha innocently asks if it is Vicco Vajradanti… Being juvenile is an understatement at this point.

There are far too many songs, which could have been well avoided.

Even the bad man Prakash Raj, who plays the international Don Gani, makes you laugh intermittently especially in the scene when the Commissioner of Police holds him captive in the middle of the sea. Or when he accuses Salman of killing his men. Don’t miss his lines here as he rues, “Oh, why did you kill them? You can churn out several police officers everyday. But where will I get such goons? They were criminals, not animals that you have slaughtered them so mercilessly…” Corny it may seem, but you’ll still find yourself laughing your lungs out.

The film rides high on Salman’s star power. If there’s any film that can compete with Aamir’s Ghajini in terms of action, it’s definitely Wanted. Without getting into any controversy I’d like to say, Salman was certainly more fun watching as Prabhu Deva made his presence felt in every frame.

Albeit there’s a little twist in the end, the storyline is more or less predictable. Salman takes care not to upset his female fans either. So girls, if you don’t like him kicking butt (which I doubt when it’s SALMAN KHAN) you can simply sit back and drool over the star.

Ayesha Takia looks cute and much slimmer. Vinod Khanna is good and so is Govind Namdeo. Mahesh Manjrekar is brilliant as the slimy and corrupt cop.

VERDICT: An out-and-out entertainer, Salman is sure to enthrall you not only with his action but his brilliant dance steps.

RATING: 3/5

Wacky lyrics set bollywood on fire !!!

Yes that’s true and that’s what I think. Bollywood is on fire nowadays with very wacky lyrics used here and there. Like for instance just have a look at Mann Ka Radio (written by Subrat Sinha) from RADIO. The lyrics is so refreshing and even at the same time wacky too. It’s a kind of new generation I hope. Ofcourse, the generation must change. There must be a new innovation now and then to keep the interest the people alive. :)

mann ka radio bajne de zara

ghum ko bhool kar jee le tu zara

station koi naya tune kar le zara

fultoo attitude de de tu zara

WOW!!! What a lyric it is… Good. But I have listened to many people who say that these kind of wacky lyrics are just a crap. But still I liked this one.

Well the next song I would like to name in this list of wacky lyrics is Chiggi Wiggi (written by Abbas Tyrewala) from the movie BLUE. What a sexy word Chiggi-Wiggi is!!! It’s just fantabulous. I am sure every music lover might have listened to this song. It’s simply great. The new Chiggi-Wiggi Style baby!!!

I wanna chiggy-wiggy with you boy

I wanna chiggy-wiggy with you boy

I wanna chiggy-wiggy with you fella

Just chiggy-wiggy with you baby

Now one can remember these kind of wacky lyrics very easily.

And I am working on a musical album which is a going big blast. It’s still under production. So a dear friend of mine (Dr. Zakir Husain) has written some beautiful lyrics for the album. So he has even written a wacky lyric for a duet song. I thought of sharing the lyrics with you people. But the album is still under production and due to security reason I am not able to share it. You people have to wait for it. The release date according to our plans is somewhere around May 2010 (we hope so). :)

So I hope we will be listening to even more wacky lyrics in the near future. A feeling tells me. Let’s wait and see.

BOLLYWOOD BADSHAH SALMAN KHAN A GREAT FAN OF BIGG BOSS??

By Frank Franklyn – Futuristic Media Network

A special jasoos tells us that Bollywood badshah Salman Khan is a great fan of a particular television reality show. Now you don’t have to be a PhD in Bollywood entertainment to guess which TV show is catching Sallu miyas attention these days. It’s none other than Bigg Boss. And no points for guessing why. How can we forget that Sallu’s ‘special friend’ Claudia Ciesla is in Bigg Boss and the popular reality show has just entered its last phase now?

Our source tells us that once the show goes on air each evening, Sallu bhaiya tries to catch up wherever he is. If not, he will try to get the late night edition or will try to find out the outcome of the day from friends. And Fridays and Mondays – the eviction and nomination days respectively – are very special. Bollywood’s favourite star and heart-throb of millions of women the world over, will do everything to be in front of a TV set on Fridays and Mondays. We tried to ask Salman about his sudden interest in Bigg Boss, but all that he did was give us one of his trillion-dollar shy smiles. Ok Sally bhaiya we get the point. We will leave you to your TV set at least on Fridays and Mondays.

Meanwhile, the sexy, cute super model from Germany Claudia Ciesla may soon be seen as a cold-blooded killer in the brutal Raaj Varma Entertainment thriller movie THE LUCKY 13TH.  According to our sources, Claudia Ciesla’s role in the movie will demand her to brutally kill at least two people to survive as per the script of the movie.

While Claudia Ciesla may be locked away in the Bigg Boss house at Lonavla, a little birdie from Bollywood tells us that the 22-year-old German super model is soon expected to be seen in – as director Praveen Dodeja puts it – “the scariest movie ever made in India”.

Yes we are talking about the Praveen Dodeja directed; Raaj Varma Entertainment produced film THE LUCKY 13TH. Confirming this development Claudia Ciesla’s spokesperson and Executive Producer of THE LUCKY 13TH Flynn Remedios said, “Claudia Ciesla will most probably be a part of this project. We are trying to work things out as this is a big project and Claudia’s presence would add a twist to the story.”

While neither the director nor the Executive Producer were willing to share further details about the film, sources told us that The Lucky 13th will indeed be the scariest movie ever made in India. It is pregnant with blood and gore and is definitely a very, if not the most brutal film ever made. In the film THE LUCKY 13TH produced by Raaj Varma Entertainment, 13 young people all mysteriously inter-connected with each other find themselves in a desolate fort in the middle of no-where. A sinister fight to survive and get out of the place by killing the others is unleashed on the hapless 13 who have no choice but to heed the diktak of the evil monster. Only one will survive the ordeal, but not before he or she has brutally done to death the rest of the gang. The film stars German super model Claudia Ciesla (currently locked up in the Bigg Boss House, TV actor Swapna Tiwari, Jennifer besides 10 others.

Sometimes, more is just more

My oldest daughter has a new summer job. She’s been a nanny for the last two summers and she’s having a hard time adjusting to a “real” job – one that doesn’t involve swimming in the pool each afternoon, playing board games or taking field trips to the local Natural History Museum. Sigh. Poor kid.

So, the other day — nice mom that I am — I bought her a pair of dangly earrings to wear to work and cheer her up a bit. I mean honestly, who can feel that badly when they are wearing gorgeous new jewelry?!

As I searched through the racks and cases I was struck by a wonderful trend — Bollywood-inspired styles — loads of multicolored beads, large hoops, shoulder-dusters — even pieces that featured carved elephants and raja-worthy faux gems.

Personally, I have been a huge Bollywood fan since I first saw Bride and Prejudice back in 2004 starring incomparably beautiful Aishwarya Rai. (How much fun CAN you have dancing around in your pajamas?!) Kitchy, yes. But oh so much fun!

The best part of any Bollywood production for me, though, is the fashion. Bright colors like lime green and shocking pink, fabrics shots with metallic threads, and of course, piles and piles of sparkly jewelry!

Apparently, I’m not alone in this fascination for “more is more.” Just last night on So You Think You Can Dance (yes, I am a fan) the opening number for the “girls” was a fabulous Indian-themed extravaganza. There is something so wonderfully feminine and alluring about the Bollywood style — they never looked better.

… maybe I’ll have to borrow those earrings myself!

Ranbir in success glory

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor, who is celebrating success of his latest flick ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani‘, has refused to director Ram Gopal Verma in his upcoming movie.

Ranbir in success glory

It is being known that maverick director Ram Gopal Verma is a huge fan of the actor. He is eager to cast him in a role opposite Amitabh Bachchan but Ranbir showed no interest in the project. He has offered him role of Kay Kay’s son in Sarkar 3. The reason is that Ranbir’s role in Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti is similar to Sarkar 3.

According to the sources Ram Gopal Verma desired to make a romantic film with Ranbir. Now it’s obvious that successful actor like Ranbir will think that way, as RGV’s has given fewer hits and more flops, especially his last romantic hit was Rangeela, that too almost a decade ago.

(Taba, tenías razón, me iba a gustar).

First Look - Dulha Mil Gaya

From prince Saleem to Bill Clinton, everyone suffered in love and King Khan is all set to save you from it!

King of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan turns into ‘King of Love’ keeping sensual and serene Sushmita Sen alongside and Fardeen Khan in tow.. what happens next! Sparkles, I believe. They are all set to rob million hearts in Mudassar Aziz’s comedy caper ‘Dulha Mil Gaya’ which is slated to release in January 2010.

Shahrukh has done ‘King of Love’ while Sushmita is Queen of ‘Oomph’ with Fardeen masking himself as ‘Prince of Confusion’. The trio will take you on a fun filled adventure to the Carribean Island – most of us know West Indies because of cricket – to make you learn ‘Videshi’ bhangra on calyso tune and SRK will conspire how to find you Bride or Groom!!

If you are still confused, wait for the New Year when your confusions will end in laughter!

Reasons to love travelling #6 - Foreign film and music

Until the summer I’d never really considered watching a Bollywood movie.  Having worked in a cinema I’d seen snippets of some of the epics produced by the east, but I’d never fancied sitting through a mushy three-hour love story and tolerating either the bad dubbing or the eyeball-sapping subtitles.

The closest I had got was, like most of the rest of the world, watching Danny Boyle’s fantastic Slumdog Millionaire, though even that hadn’t piqued my interest sufficiently to explore the scene further.

But, as the saying goes, “When in Rome…”  So when in Jaipur in August I went to Raj Mandir, widely described as India’s best cinema, to see Love Aaj Kal.  The whole experience was a delightful coalescence of East and West – after four weeks of parathas and rice and a vegetarian diet I tucked into a McDonald’s chicken burger and followed it up with an ice-cream with some gusto, before crossing the road and going back into the Raj Mandir.

Got shouted at for taking this picture...

The inside is deliciously opulent, with sweeping stairways and big chandeliers.  I was admonished for taking photographs by a woman dressed like a maharani, so I went and explored the food offerings – the usual popcorn and confectionery, but also a range of Indian snacks like samosas and pakoras.

Tickets come in three different bands; I was automatically given the diamond rate as a tourist, which meant I was sat in a balcony on a very comfy reclining seat rather than sat on the harder seats down below.  It was a Tuesday night but it was still packed; cinema is big business in India.

The audience cheered and whooped along as the on-screen frissons developed into relationships, break-ups and then ultimately a nicely tied-up wedding; pretty conventional stuff, but it was high on entertainment and dancing.  One especially memorable scene took place in London and saw a dancing beefeater emerge from a red phone box and end up in a nightclub.

It was very easy to follow what was going on as there were occasional words and conversations in English, and the plot wasn’t exactly deep.  The soundtrack was much more heavily integrated into the film than in Hollywood movies, with frequent song-and-dance routines performed by the characters.

The film was a Bollywood blockbuster, and the song Twist was playing everywhere (as was Jai Ho from Slumdog) – I managed to pick up a copy of the soundtrack for less than a quid in Kathmandu’s equivalent of HMV, and still haven’t tired of it.  Now the challenge is to find the DVD in time for Christmas…

Music Review: Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009)

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s pairing in this film has grabbed everyone’s eyeballs and given it its needed publicity. The music which was launched recently has a fresh feel to it and each song has something new to offer, which is evident from the number of artistes roped in.

The album starts with Main Tera Dhadkan Teri, which is already become a chartbuster. KK, Sunidhi Chauhan and Hard Kaur make it one of the best hears in the album. The song has a remix, by DJ Suketu.

Hard Kaur is heard once again in Follow Me which is a good track by itself and sounds better than its reprises.

Tu Jaane Na, a romantic number, is one of the best tracks what with Atif Aslam doing the vocals and Pritam composing some fabulous music. The reprise has Soham, Rana Mazumdar and Ashish Pandit but Kailash Kher’s unplugged version beats it easily.

The next song, Oh By God, is fun to listen to with its wedding themed beats and vocals by Mika and Sunidhi Chauhan.

Tera Hone Laga Hoon, once again with Atif Aslam, this time with Alisha Chinoy, at the vocals, is the second romantic track in the album which carries a lot of promise and is once again one of the must-listens in the album. DJ Suketu’s remix is quite spunky too.

Prem Ki Naiyya is definitely not one of the most recommended songs in the album. While it can be fun to listen to at some times, it can be equally boring at others.

Aa Jao Meri Tamanna is one of those songs that you feel you’ve heard somewhere before. It is a track that carries a motive to do well, so, it may work with some and may not sound all that great to others. The remix of the song, however, gives it a club feel and makes it sound refreshing.

All in all, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani makes for a good buy. Pritam fans will definitely not be disappointed and even those who aren’t very fond of Pritam will still enjoy the album to a good bit. So, go ahead, listen to the album…we give it a big thumbs-up!

Deepika For Mallya Team....

Deepika Padukone came to lime light because of Vijay Mallya only. She has appeared in his bikini calender years back which helped to her career very much. She caught many designers and Bollywood movie makers eye with that stills.
When Vijay Mallya own the IPL team Bangalore Royal Challengers, every one expected that, she will be with him to encourage his team. But that chance went to Katrina Kaif.

But Vijay Mallya has opted Deepika as cheer leader for Force India F1 team. Mallya has partner ship in this team. Recently has appeared at Abu Dhabhi grand prix to cheer the team.

Wake Up Sid

Ranbir Kapoor who made his debut with the film Saawariya bagged critical acclaim for his performance, but failed to create sensations at Box Office. Second Bachan Ae Haseeno movie did an average business and gave some good profits to the producer.

He has bagged his first super hit with Wake Up Sid. Konkana Sen Sharma paired opposite. Ayan Mukherjee directde this film under Karan Johar’s own banner Dharma Productions. Once again Karan Johar has shown his judgement perfection in story selection.

Siddharth aka Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) is easy going guy who has some good financial back ground. His only job in the entire day is enjoying with the friends. He meets Aisha (Konkana Sen Sharma) who came to Mumbai recently. She is very matured girl, has dream to become a professional writer.

Sid is forced to leave house when he refuses to work in his father’s company. Aisha allows him to stay in her house. There first he learns cooking to avoid his loneliness. Aisha offers a small job to him. In the time while he is spending time with Aisha he comes to know the value of life.

He goes back to home and starts new life there. He notices the affection of Aisha towards him and accepts her love.

Mrityudand (1997)

Directed by: Prakash Jha

Starring: Madhuri Dixit, Shabana Azmi, Ayub Khan, Mohan Joshi, Om Puri, Shilpa Shirodkar

No country makes better movies about women’s suffrage and discrimination than India. Water/Fire/Earth, Lajja, Amar Prem (sorta), etc. And why not? It’s dramatic, and if Bollywood movies are anything…they’re dramatic (some might say melodramatic, and in many cases that’s true too.) Prompted by the fact that Madhuri is such an amazing dancer (really…if you haven’t seen any Madhuri movies, you’re missing out.) Now, while in some rights this film is nowhere near as intense as Water (for certain…reasons…) it has some wonderful elements to it, which makes the movie an all-round good film.

It begins with two women fleeing a violent and brutal crowd of men-folk. One of the women is pregnant, but the crowd is immune to her plight…they even stoop so far as to drag the poor girl through the mud. Finally…she is murdered, along with the other woman. The magistrate comes to investigate matters.

One of the village men is angry, and tells his wife, Kanti (Shilpa Shirodkar), that he’s going to go confess about what those other men did.

But he isn’t rich, and is also in debt. That’s when Tirpat Singh (Mohan Joshi) shows up, and instead of going to spill the beans to the magistrate…the guy finds himself helpless, as his wife begs for Tirpat Singh to let her work to pay off her husband’s debts. She promises to do ‘ANYTHING’ for the guy, and he agrees because of that one magic word.

The village men claim that the women were sluts with little to no sanity, and actually brought their deaths upon themselves. The mob was only defending itself from two vicious, crazy women. Of course, this whole fiasco was really all engineered by none other than Tirpat Singh. Rambaran Manto (Om Puri) attests that the village doesn’t want this inquiry, it disrupts the peace (as if that didn’t already happen.) Everyone leaves and pretends to forget about the matter.

And then we meet Ketki (Madhuri Dixit), a bubbly young woman who has just become a bride. Her husband’s name is Vinay (Ayub Khan)…for future reference. After the wedding, we get to meet Ketki’s sister-in-law/Vinay’s sister-in-law, Chandravati (Shabana Azmi). We find out early on that Chandravati’s husband is a jerk. This is illustrated by his inability to socialize with…well, anyone. He’s also an alcoholic who’s way too free with his money (real surprise there.) And it doesn’t make sense, considering the fact that he’s married to someone like Chandravati (she is played by the lovely Shabana, after all.)

But enough of that drama. Time for a song!

The upper-caste men in this village play a dangerous game of bribery and deceit, and Chandravati’s husband pays for the murder of a certain Abbot…and gains the man’s position, in turn. In doing so, he must abandon his wife. Thus, Chandravati is forced into a false widowhood. The other women in the household claim it is fate, though one says that had she born him a son…this would not have happened. Therefore it’s Chandravati’s fault, of course.

Tirpat Singh sees this as a chance to get at the ‘widow’s’ family, and gain quarry rights to their land. But Vinay’s father isn’t having it. Back to Ketki and Vinay, it looks like their marriage is turning out to be all sunshine and lollypops. But despite the fact that they’re happy together, the family faces financial strain. Due partially to their caste, and situation. But Ketki cares about her husband, and is willing to sell her jewelry for him, as a business investment. She expects to get it back in no time.

But for the sake of ambition and greed, Vinay, in essence, makes the proverbial deal with the devil by allying himself with Tirpat Singh. He is immediately (though he doesn’t realize it) betrayed by that same man, and loses his investments, along with the value of his wife’s bangles. This is of course, only part of Tirpat’s plan to bring Vinay closer to him…as a result, against his father’s wishes…and without his knowledge…Vinay signs a contract with Tirpat to quarry his land. Personally, I was surprised that he didn’t sign the damn contract in blood.

Vinay proceeds to become a good-for-nothing angry drunk bordering on abusive. And with that, the joy of marriage is shattered for poor Ketki. Vinay is a fool, unwilling to accept the knowledge or advice of his family…thus he is royally cheated by Tirpat, and doesn’t even see most of the money he should be receiving from his business. As for Chandravati, her health has begun to fail her. She is hospitalized, and seen to by Rambaran, who willingly pays the doctor’s bills for her. In the process, they grow close…and they have an affair.

Vinay does love his wife, but he’s an idiot. But she forgives him, because she loves him too. He’s grown wise to Tirpat’s tricks, and cancels his contract. Tirpat’s ticked off, of course…being the bad guy, and he promises in a congenial manner that he will get all of his money back…with interest…he’s sure of it. Thus the gong of dramatic foreshadowing has been rung.

Did I like the movie? Yeah. It was pretty good. Am I going to tell you the ending? Not on your life. My final rating for Mrityudand is 7 out of 10 bindis. However, an early warning…there may be some good songs in this, but it is not chock-full of Madhuri dance numbers. It also drags a little at times, but still well worth watching at least once. And let’s not forget Shabana Azmi (I love Shabana) who did an absolutely wonderful job in her role as well, on a final note.

No SRK In Adi's Next Flick

Aditya Chopra who has directed only 3 films in 14 years is ready to direct his next movie. His first movie Delawale Dulhania Le Jayenge took Bollywood to new heights and broken classic Sholay‘s records. Second film Mohabbatein lived up to expectations and gave new style to Bollywood.

But the third film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi didn’t did any magics at Box Office.  In these three movies Shah Rukh Khan was the protagonist. This time Aditya Chopra has opted Ranbir Kapoor for the lead role. He is planning to come up with a feel good love story like his debut venture DDLZ. Third movie result only the cause for this replacement.

But according the sources Shahrukh continues working in Yash Raj Films banner.

Bachchan tells Oprah he'd like to have an overrated legacy-baby soon

Making his first appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Indian super-actor Abhishek Bachchan announced to a delighted audience that he’d soon like to have a mediocre talent of a baby.

“After what I’ve been through and the success I’ve had, I just want to pass it all on to a child who won’t really have to work hard or do anything,” said Bachchan as his wife clutched his hand, trying not to blow away. “I hope that thanks to the time and effort I’ve put in, I can raise a child who can simply live off my success and enjoy their life.”

It was Bachchan’s first appearance on the show, and while he appeared nervous at first, he opened up to the crowd when Oprah broached the subject of children.

“Any child of mine will be able to walk right out of bed, completely unshaven, and onto the set of any movie. He’ll say ‘I’m Abhishek Bachchan’s son’ and they’ll give him what he wants. To me, that’s what I worked so hard for.”

The segment turned into a monologue of sorts, with Bachchan continuing to rave about how his talents will affect future generations of his family. He went so far as to express hopes that his son would star in the next installment of Umrao Jaan.

“I don’t care! Let my son be some goon with no romantic ability on-screen. He’ll still be the leading actor in every movie he’s in!”

Bachchan was accompanied by his wife, Aishwariya Rai. The two stirred their fans worldwide when Bachchan kissed Rai on the cheek for the first time on camera.

“It’s liberating,” said Rai of touring the west. “Logistically, this is literally the only place we can be intimate with each other. Every time you try to kiss someone in India, suddenly – snap, cut – you’re in the mountains singing and dancing! “

“Unless you’re Richard Gere,” Oprah insensitively joked.

Although it was Rai’s second appearance on the show, she was much quieter this time, yielding to her baby-crazy husband. Her first appearance came during a promotional tour of her film Bride and Prejiduce, in 2004. During that visit, she took part in the Oprah tradition of audience-give-aways by distributing her talent equally to each member of the screaming, overjoyed audience.

Some of her notable films since have been Raincoat, Dhoom 2, and Jodhaa Akbar.

Preity turned cheerleader for Salman

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta played the role of a perfect cheerleader for dear friend Salman Khan whose “Being Human” show at the ongoing HDIL India Couture Week here late Tuesday saw many celebrities strutting down the ramp.

Dressed in a “Being Human” sleeveless T-shirt and sporting a new look with fringes falling perfectly on her forehead, the actress looked as ravishing as ever.

Sitting with her friend choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan and fashion designer Manish Malhotra, the actress started shouting from the very first moment when Salman Khan started the show and sashayed down the ramp.

“Wow! Salman! Salman!,” shouted Zinta and continued clapping till he left the ramp.

It was not just for Salman, she also cheered for other celebrities like Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Govinda, Sanjay Dutt, Katrina Kaif, Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan with equal enthusiasm.

Farah Khan and Manish Malhotra joined her and together left no stone unturned to pep up the atmosphere.

“I must tell you that my throat is already gone. I was so happy that all this shouting and cheering just happened. The show was all about being human and being together. It celebrated togetherness of the industry and this is what had me do all the shouting. But it is worth it,” Preity told IANS after the show.

Commenting on Aamir Khan’s ramp debut, she said that the actor looked cute.

“I think he was looking very cute on the ramp. He is already so charming and you can’t take that away from him,” she said.

Voici quelques passages.

The Heart Yells Hurrah!

Dil Bole Hadippa! (The Heart Says Hurrah!) is a Bollywood comedy worth your time and money. Honestly! I wasn’t too eager to watch it at first but my very good friend Evelyn Rose convinced me. So there we were, falling down laughing, hooting, snorting, cackling, guffawing, having hysterics, and even rolling in the aisles. All because the movie was fantastically hilarious. Sidesplitting and uproariously funny.

Based loosely on the 2006 Hollywood comedy She’s the Man, Yash Raj Films’ Dil Bole Hadippa! wins over your heart, tickles your funny bone and guarantees a rib-tickling comedy with Rani Mukerji and Shahid Kapoor in the leads and Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil, Rakhi Sawant and Sherlyn Chopra in supporting roles.

Now the plot. Veera (Rani Mukerji ) hails from a small village and dreams big to play cricket in the big league despite all odds are against her. Obviously! She works at her dancing theater with star performer and femme-fatal, Shanno (Rakhi Sawant). Veera is so determine to fulfill her dream and goes as far as trying-out for the all-men Indian National Cricket team. Bravo, Veera! Initially humiliated but with re-newed determination, Veera fools everyone but herself and disguises as a man and adopts a new identity as Veer and tries her luck – for a second time. Voilà! Veera is now part of the team. Things get out-of-hand hilarious when Rohan (Shahid Kapoor), the team’s coach, falls for Veera.

Rani Mukerji was absolutely fantastic in her first-time-ever, manly-role as Veer. As the extremely talented actress she is, Mukerji proves that she is up for any challenge and excels effortlessly for the role of Veera-slash-Veer. As the movie brings the best in Rani Mukerji, she deserves a round of applause for her versatility and her flawless yet humorous portrayal of Veer.

Easily the best Bollywood comedy so far this year, treating you for a cackle-fest. Watch it for Rani Mukerji, if not to go totally ballistic with hysteria just like I did. Oh, what fun!

Movie Review: Wake Up Sid (2009)

3.5 Stars

I’m always apprehensive when the lead character in Hindi film is a rich kid. In a typical masala movie, the rich kid has great-looking friends, a hot car and becomes a vice president at a huge corporation right out of college. It’s a life that many filmmakers assume that the rest of us wish we were living.

Wake Up Sid is more sophisticated than that. Although the main character, Sid, has a cool car, his life seems like that of a real person, and not some fantasy character.

As the film begins, Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) celebrates taking his final exams with his two best friends, Laxmi (Shikha Talsania) and Rishi (Namit Das). In a rare display of realism in casting, Sid’s friends — and the rest of his classmates — aren’t all potential Miss Indias or cool dudes. They look like regular college kids. Laxmi is smart but struggles with her weight, and Rishi is an average-looking guy eager to propose to his girlfriend.

While partying, Sid meets Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma). It’s her first day in Mumbai, where she hopes to become a journalist. Sid shows her the town after agreeing that they will nothing more than friends. He bails on his job at his dad’s bathroom fixture company to help Aisha get settled in Mumbai.

Then Sid learns that he’s failed his exams, while Laxmi and Rishi have passed and graduated. He vents his anger against them and his parents as well, who kick him out of the house and cut him off financially. He moves in with Aisha, only to discover that he has no ambition and no life skills. For the first time, Sid has to learn responsibility and find a direction.

The film ends the way you expect it to, but the way it gets there is refreshing. Early in the movie, there’s little to like about Sid. He’s fun, but he’s spoiled and ungrateful. His tense relationship with his mother feels especially realistic; he’s mean to her in a way that only an angry teen (or in Sid’s case, a spoiled twenty-year-old) can be.

As his character develops, Sid learns empathy from Laxmi, the value of friendship from Rishi, and self-sufficiency from Aisha. Sid’s maturity is so stunted that he celebrates every minor step toward independence as though he just discovered electricity.

Director Ayan Mukerji is patient enough to give the audience an accurate picture of who Sid is and then takes the time to show Sid’s incremental progress, without the movie ever feeling slow. There are a few musical montages, but no unnecessary dance numbers to stop the movie’s momentum.

What's Your Raashee? Movie Review

Despite seeing this movie the night before its release on 25 September 2009, What’s Your Raashee was so disappointing that finding the motivation to write a review of this atrocity was difficult. Sorry to all of our readers for the late posting!

At first, despite the overused storyline of the influence of astrology on contemporary Indians, the movie seemed as if it could be interesting. With Priyanka Chopra going down in the Guinness Book of World Records for playing the most roles in one movie (12) than any other actress, the film could have been interesting.

What’s Your Raashee? depicts the story of a man, Yogesh Patel, whose parents are forcing him to marry by the 20th of the month so that he can receive the inheritance that his grandfather intends to give him on his wedding day. This inheritance would pay off the ridiculous accrued debt of his bumbling brother, but the idea of marriage so soon, and especially an arranged marriage, is troubling to Yogesh. Simply for the love of his family, Yogesh decides to meet one girl from each of the twelve raashees so that he increases his chances of falling in love. The movie is essentially an exploration of the possibilities of online matrimonial matchmaking along with an analysis of the different personalities attributed to the different zodiac (sun) signs.

Remembering Harman Baweja and Priyanka Chopra’s pitiful first on-screen match-up, Love Story 2050, our hopes for the film went downhill.

What’s Your Raashee? simply reiterated that Harman is a horrible actor, and no matter how many roles any co-star of his played, nothing could counter-balance his falsified emotions, idiotic gestures, and lame imitations of Hrithik Roshan. Before watching the film, we speculated that perhaps in Love Story 2050 he just couldn’t connect to the idea of playing a character in the future, that science-fiction was his weakness…but seeing What’s Your Raashee changed our minds. We could barely believe that Harman’s character was able to love any of the girls that he was meeting, nor that he was deeply ruffled by his brother’s large debt or potentially fatal involvement with the mafia.

After suffering this film for three and a half hours, it is difficult to even award the movie one star; the only redeeming factor was the slightly interesting roles that Priyanka played. The only reason we managed to stay until the end was to tie up the loose ends created in the film. The ending was another downer, a quickly told ending that was typical of the poorer movies of Bollywood, a simple summary of the going-ons that no one witnessed on-screen. The transition between a girl of each raashee was depicted through strange interpretative dance, and the songs corresponding to each girl were long and boring.

Disappointed, but unable to not applaud Priyanka for her stunning transformation of characters, we must give this film 1/5 stars, simply for her entertaining acting alone.

Rating: 1/5 stars

Movie: Kaminey

Originality is a rare concept in Bollywood. Every movie that the world’s largest film industry churns out has usually predictive, borrowed and an oft-repeated script; yet once in a while, like a whiff of a fresh air, releases a movie that grips the core of one’s imagination. The latest Indian movie ‘Kaminey’ (Rascals) by Vishal Bhardwaj is one such movie. So fastened your seat belts, get ready for the wild ride and enjoy the two hours of edge-of- the-seat entertainment.

‘Kaminey’ is about twin brothers, Charlie and Guddu [Shahid Kapur] (no, they were not separated in the village fair). Three years ago the two brother who have nothing in common set on different paths and vow not to see each other again but life put them face to face in an unexpected turn of events.
Charlie, who lisps as he pronounces ‘S’ as ‘F’, have a deadly formula of shortcut for achieving things in life. One night he finds a guitar case with cocaine worth of 10 crore rupees that can set him as a professional bookie. But life never offers anything so easily and he gets himself into a deep mess. His twin brother Guddu, who stammers, works as social worker and spreads awareness about HIV but ironically ends up impregnating his girlfriend Sweety [Priyanka Chopra]. Guddu after a little reluctance marries her. But to his dismay Sweety turns out to be a sister of a local goon cum aspiring politician Bhope Bahu [Amol Gupte] who is hell bent on making Guddu’s life hard. The two brothers strive to save their necks and of their loved ones and in the process they suck deeper into the world of bookies, drug mafia, corrupt cops and gangsters.

The performance by Shahid Kapur as twins is top-notch. Forget ‘Ishq Vishq, Vivah, Jab We Met and Kismet Konnection; this is undoubtedly the best performance of his career so far where he finally managed to shed his chocolate boy image and emerged as a rough and tough man. He masters the speech defect perfectly. You can’t help falling in love with Charlie’s lisp. Every time he pronounces ‘saale’ as ‘faale’ and ‘dus’ as ‘duf’ a smile is bound to appear.

Priyanka Chopra has a short role as the screen is mostly dominated by Shahid Kapur but she does leave an impression in a role of a feisty, Marathi girl. She gets loud as required by the script but doesn’t go overboard. The surprise package is a diabetic thug cum aspiring politician played by Amol Gupte (the writer and creative director of Taare Zameen Per). His filthy look and uncouth personality is a treat to watch.

The music is ‘Dhan Te Nan’. Yes, the movie has other soothing tracks but it is the ‘Dhan Te Nan’ that topped the charts and could be heard playing everywhere. The song can more or less fall in the same league as ‘Goli Maar Bheje Main’ from the movie ‘Satya’. When I listened the song first time, I thought to give it a miss but when I heard it the second time the music grew on me. It is not easy to ignore Gulzar’s lyrics anyway. Every popular piece of work tends to invite some sort of controversy and this song was no exception. The song has lyrics ‘Til Til Tara Mira Teli Ka Tel’; the Teli Samaj found the lyrics disgusting and demanded them to be changed. Vishal’s reaction to the controversy was that he’d change the lyrics only if the hundreds of phrases related to Teli Samaj were removed from the Hindi books.

Vishal Bhardwaj, the director, writer and composer of the movie deserves accolades because stories like those are easy to conceive but in the process of filming focus can be lost easily and the end result is a sheer disappointment. He came in the limelight in 1996 with his popular song ‘Chappa Chappa Charkha Chale’ from the film ‘Maachis’ (again the Gulzar-Vishal combo) and now he don’t need any introduction. His iconoclast movies such as: Makdee, Maqbool, The Blue Umbrella, Omkara and Blood Brothers (a short movie about HIV awareness) speaks volumes about his caliber and have already established him as one of the finest filmmakers.

The movie is definitely worth a watch. IF you like pulp movies.

Highest paid actors of 2009

It was a good year for the top-earning men in Hollywood. Seven of our top 20 raked in more than $30 million. To figure out earnings we spoke to agents, managers, producers and lawyers to come up with estimated earnings between June 2008 and June 2009.

Harrison Ford

$65 million

After years of staying on the down low, Ford reemerged this year for Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones series that started in 1981. Ford’s earnings on the movie come exclusively from his share of the profits of the film, which earned $786 million at the worldwide box office.

Adam Sandler

$55 million

The former Saturday Night Live star has proved himself to be a solid hit maker with movies like this year’s Bedtime Stories and You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, which earned a combined $413 million at the box office. Up next: Funny People, directed by his former roommate Judd Apatow.

Will Smith

$45 million

Smith proved once again that he owns July 4 with last summer’s Hancock. Despite middling reviews, the film grossed $624 million at the worldwide box office. Smith’s status as a global superstar helped keep his downer film Seven Pounds from being a total disaster. The movie earned almost $100 million overseas.

Eddie Murphy

$40 million
Despite the failure of Meet Dave (the film made only $50 million at the worldwide box office), Murphy continues to earn big paychecks for his work in family comedies. That could change if his two upcoming movies, Imagine That and A Thousand Words, don’t perform.

Nicolas Cage

$40 million

The actor doesn’t earn the same size paychecks as some of the other men topping our list, but he works twice as hard. Cage currently has six films scheduled for release over the next two years. Part of the reason for his work ethic could be the fact that he owes millions to the IRS.

Tom Hanks

$35 million

Hanks is one of the few stars who still earns $20 million upfront paychecks for his work in movies like Angels & Demons, which has grossed $407 million for Sony at the worldwide box office. Hanks also makes a nice living producing hits like last year’s Mamma Mia.

Tom Cruise

$30 million

Cruise managed to avoid any embarrassing tabloid moments over the last 12 months, and his movie Valkyrie did better than expected, earning $200 million at the worldwide box office. But the thing that most helped Cruise rehab his image this year was his cameo as an obnoxious Hollywood executive in Tropic Thunder.

Jim Carrey

$28 million

The funny man took a big risk this year on his film Yes Man. In lieu of his $20 million upfront pay, Carrey became an investor in the movie taking one-third of the film’s profits. The unusual deal turned out to be a good one for Carrey. By the time the movie has earned all its money he’ll pocket $35 million.

Brad Pitt

$28 million

Pitt was nominated for an Oscar this year for his work in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and also earned some cold cash from the film, which brought in $333 million at the worldwide box office. Up next: hunting for Nazi scalps in Inglourious Basterds.

Johnny Depp

$27 million

Depp falls to 10th place on our list after earning $72 million last year. The reason: no new Pirates Of The Caribbean movie. The fourth installment is scheduled for 2012. In the meantime, he’ll play John Dillinger in Public Enemies and the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s version of Alice in Wonderland.

George Clooney

$25 million

The star hasn’t appeared in a blockbuster hit outside of the Ocean’s series since 2000’s The Perfect Storm. Instead, Clooney has opted for smaller films like last year’s ensemble movie Burn After Reading. Up next: Men Who Stare At Goats, which was one of the few films to find a buyer at the recent Cannes Film Festival.

Russell Crowe $20 million The volatile actor stumbled with last year’s Body Of Lies that costarred Leonardo DiCaprio. The film grossed $115 million. But Crowe can still earn big paychecks on movies like the upcoming Robin Hood, which will hit theaters next summer. Robert Downey Jr.

$20 million

Iron Man grossed $580 million at the worldwide box office, proving that despite his checkered history, Downey is still a draw in the right part. The film’s success allowed him to boost his asking price on Iron Man 2, helping the actor earn $20 million over the last 12 months.

Denzel Washington

$20 million

While starring in blockbusters like American Gangster and Inside Man, Washington has also been honing his skills behind the camera, directing 2007’s The Great Debaters. Coming up next: a remake of The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 and The Book Of Eli about a post-apocalyptic America.

Vince Vaughn

$14 million

The comedian continues to be a solid draw in movies like Four Christmases and Fred Clause, even if his films don’t set the box office on fire. He’s a producer on this fall’s Couple’s Retreat, a comedy that costars Jon Favreau and Jason Bateman.

Ben Stiller

$14 million

The actor had a hit with last summer’s Tropic Thunder, which grossed $188 million at the worldwide box office. Stiller was the star of the film and also the writer, director and producer. He also makes big bucks starring in comedies like Night At The Museum 2, which has so far earned $280 million at the worldwide box office.

Seth Rogen

$12 million

Rogen appeared in four movies over the last 12 months, including Pineapple Express and Monsters Vs. Aliens, in which he was the voice of B.O.B., a blob-like monster. Up next: Funny People, directed by his mentor Judd Apatow and starring Adam Sandler.

Matt Damon

$11 million

Damon makes the big bucks when he plays Jason Bourne in the action series, but brings in less for more serious movies. This year there was no Bourne, so his earnings are coming mostly from his work in the upcoming Nelson Mandela biopic starring Morgan Freeman and directed by Clint Eastwood.

Christian Bale

$10 million

Bale got more ink for his abusive rant on the set of Terminator Salvation than for his acting this year, but he still managed to appear in several blockbusters, including The Dark Knight, which is the second highest-grossing film of all time behind Titanic. Up next: He plays federal agent Melvin Purvis hot on the trail of John Dillinger in Public Enemies.

Will Ferrell

10 million
The funnyman had a rough year. His movies Step Brothers and Semi-Pro under-performed his earlier hits like Blades Of Glory and Talladega Nights. Things got even worse last weekend when his big-budget remake of Land Of The Lost opened to only $18 million, putting it in third place behind The Hangover and Up.

Shamshad Begum

Shamshad Begum (born April 14, 1919) is an Indian singer who was one of the first playback singers in the Hindi film industry.

Begum was born in Amritsar, Punjab. She was a big fan of K.L. Saigal and watched Devdas 14 times. She earned 15 rupees per song and was awarded 5,000 on the completion of the contract on Xenophone, a renowned music recording company.

Sometime back, a controversy erupted in the media, when several publications gave the false news of her death, before it was clarified that the Shamshad Begum who died in 1998 was Saira Banu’s (Dilip Kumar’s wife) grandmother with the same name. The singer has been living with her daughter Usha Ratra and son-in-law in Mumbai, ever since her husband Ganpat Lal Batto died in 1955.Recently, she celebrated her 89th birthday at her elder sister’s house and now she stays at Powai, Mumbai  She was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2009.

Begum made her debut on radio on Peshawar Radio in Lahore on December 16, 1937, captivating the hearts of her listeners with the enchanting depth of her voice. Shamshad was very much conscious of her not so beautiful face and she never posed for any pictures and not many people saw her pictures anywhere. Until the end of the 1970s, nobody knew her face at all, though everybody could recognise her melodious voice as it was used by the great maestros like Naushad Ali and O. P. Nayyar. Even today, her songs from the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s are popular and continue to be remixed by music directors.

Begum sang for the All India Radio (AIR) through her musical group ‘The Crown Imperial Theatrical Company of Performing Arts’, set up in Delhi. The then AIR Lahore helped her entering the world of movies as they frequently broadcast her songs, which induced music directors to use her voice for their films. Shamshad also recorded “naats” and devotional music for a couple of gramophone recording companies.

Her crystal-clear voice caught the attention of sarangi maestro Ustad Hussain Bakshwale Saheb, who took her as his disciple. Lahore-based composer Ghulam Haider used her voice skillfully in some of his earlier films like Khazanchi (1941) and Khandaan (1942). When he moved to Bombay in 1944, Shamshad went with him as a member of his team, leaving behind her family and staying with her Chacha (paternal uncle). She is credited with singing one of the first Westernised songs, Meri jaan…Sunday ke Sunday by C. Ramchandra. O.P. Nayyar describes her voice as that of a “temple bell” for its clarity of tone. Begum became a national rage between the 1940s and the late 1950s, having a voice different from her peers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Geeta Dutt and Amirbai Karnataki.

Satte Pe Satta (1982)

I have a sad small pile of unwatched Bollywood films. Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Aradhana, and lastly… Satte Pe Satta. I needed something to watch while I was on the treadmill. I read the back of the Satte Pe Satta DVD and said to myself, “… My god, what was I on when I decided to buy this???”

But I watched it. And I kind of wish I hadn’t.

(IMDB) – After the passing away of their parents, Ravi Anand, the eldest of seven brothers, takes it upon himself to raise them – albeit a little wild and kinda animal-like. The brothers all sport long beards, hate taking showers/baths, and above all hate Ravi bossing them around. When Ravi tries to convince Nurse Sheela to marry his friend, Shekar, he mistakenly lectures the wrong girl, Indu, and as result Ravi falls head over heels in love with her. But Indu is not available to marry any stinky creep, who has not washed himself in weeks, so Ravi shaves, washes, dresses up smart, successfully woos Indu and marries her. After the marriage, Indu is shocked when she gets to meet the rest of his terrifying brothers, all the more when Ravi did not even mention that he had more than one brother.

Apparently it’s loosely based off the 1954 Hollywood musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Loosely though.

I wanted to turn it off three minutes in. But to my surprise, it greatly improved. It was actually kind of sweet there for a bit. Hema Malini and Amitabh together was great.

However… Yes, however…

Before we get with the doom and glum, I must say I had great fun singing along with this number which I didn’t even know was from this film:

Unfortunately, the really sweet and fun bit didn’t last that long. Amitabh’s six brothers fell in love with six girls (there were about 20 characters in this film – I couldn’t remember any of their names!), and they decided, “Hey! We’re going to kidnap them and make them our brides!” Hema and the girls were upset for a bit, but then it was all coool.

I’m a little disappointed that the girl in the wheelchair that the six girls were taking care of never got any of the brothers. All the brothers went for the other chicks who were flaunting their ‘assets’ in their bikinis on the beach playing jump rope. Wheelchair chick just got assassination attempts by her evil uncle (Amjad Khan), and the assassin who looked exactly like Amitabh.

And speaking of assassin!Amitabh – I actually kind of liked him. I just started hating everyone else. Assassin!Amitabh went after wheelchair chick with a knife. She fell out of her chair, scrambled over to the wall and… Oh my god, she stood up and ran over to Hema for safety! Instead of everyone going all, “OMFG WHY ARE YOU THREATENING HER WITH A HUGE KNIFE???” they say, “OMFG, YOU’VE PREFORMED A MIRACLE! WE HAVE A TON OF RESPECT FOR YOU NOW!!!” There was literal ‘*facepalm*x100′ from me.

I did think it was kind of sweet how assassin!Amitabh ended up falling in love with former!wheelchair chick and couldn’t kill her.

OH WAIT, DID I JUST SPOIL IT FOR YOU???

Rating: 2/5

God, I just need to stop watching all these Amitabh masala films. I think I’m developing an allergy or something because I just can’t stand them anymore. Kind of like when I watched three Shammi Kapoor films in a row. I love Shammi dearly, but I can only take so much of the Yahoo! personality at a time.

Maybe I just need to stop watching post-70s Amitabh masala films. Ram Balram, Hum, Satte Pe Satta – I see a pattern…
